YOUR MISSION & OUR ASK

I started The Golden Age out of a desperate need to see people who look like me represented in fine art.”
The title of the project, The Golden Age, is inspired by the Dutch Realism Golden Age of painting. The project asks us to shift our perspective and ask what if we had inclusivity in art where these stories could co-exist together.

To create a story that lives parallel to the 17th Century Dutch Renaissance, Alanna compared it to the black Renaissance of art and culture that happened in Harlem, New York. Harlem being named after the city Haarlem in the Netherlands that was the home to some of the greatest masterworks of the Dutch Golden Age. Haarlem was known for it's wealth and outpouring of art, as was Harlem.
To pay homage to Harlem, all images are named after streets or historical landmarks in Harlem. During it's renaissance, black Americans found their place in the art world through Harlem. Some of the most important art, music, and literature was created during that period. |
Alanna Aritiam
Photographer Alanna Airitam was born in Queens, New York and now resides in San Diego, California. As a portrait photographer, her work focuses on identity and representation, and proposes an investigation into the concept of wholeness. Her use of Chiaroscuro lighting creates a painterly effect, that coupled with her use of symbolism allows her to explore the duality of light and dark both metaphorically and literally. Her subjects are illuminated in a way that calls for them to be viewed as the counter to contemporary stereotypes. |
